LEVELS
The terms Newcomer, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Advanced, and Open are used to keep the level of skill among dancers in an event similar. Newcomer through Gold levels in International and American style events are restricted to syllabus figures. Lists of syllabus figures can be found at:

Both dancers in a couple must be eligible to dance at the level entered. In addition to dancing at their level each dancer may dance in events one level higher of the same dance style. For the Nightclub event, if you register for the Newcomer/Beginner level you cannot register for the Intermediate/Advanced level and vice versa.  Dancers that have competed in a level in which they have placed in either first, second, or third place must compete in the next level up.

Pre-teen event is for couples under 11
Junior event is for couples 12 to 15

Newcomer events are strictly for those just getting started and with no formal training or competitive experience. Those taking their first semester of beginning ballroom dance will find this category just right. Bronze syllabus figures can be used. No costumes.

Bronze events are for couples with minimal competitive experience. Bronze syllabus figures can be used.  No costumes.

Silver events are for dancers with competitive experience. Those taking intermediate level classes and dancing regularly should find this category appropriate.  Bronze and silver syllabus figures can be used.  Costumes are optional.

Gold events are for dancers with more competitive experience and any syllabus figures are permitted.  Costumes are optional.

Advanced events are for dancers with considerable competitive experience. No syllabus restrictions.  Costumes are recommended.

Open events are for couples with substantial competitive experience that are at the novice, pre-champ, or championship level. No restrictions on dance figures.  Costumes highly recommended.
