07. February 2007
Hi, Fellow QTIP Members and Friends,
I hope that you are all doing well. A new year has arrived, a new semester
has started, and our first official meeting of this semester will take place
this evening, on Wednesday, February 7, 2007. It has been approximately
two months since I have posted an official message to this Yahoo! Group,
and, to be honest, I miss communicating with the members and friends of
Queers Thoughtfully Interrupting Prejudice (QTIP). Since this semester started,
I have met QTIP members on and off campus a few dozen times, been e-mailed
many times by current and potential members, and have exchanged telephone
calls with those associated with QTIP. I am very happy to announce that
many members of QTIP are undoubtedly as excited as I am about our first
official meeting of the Spring 2007 semester.
And there indeed is a lot to be excited about in regards to this semester. I am proud to announce that QTIP has been approved to create one of only five rooms for the Tunnel of Oppression, an interactive, walk-through museum experience that highlights contemporary oppression by bringing such realities into a full sensory experiential manner. The Tunnel of Oppression exists in many universities nationwide and has been covered by the media numerous times. Another major project that QTIP will be involved in is the National Day of Silence Week, which will include special guests, fun events, educational programs, and much more. Committees of members will be needed to help with these two major projects.
Other plans for the Spring 2007 semester include field trips to educational centers and San Francisco's Castro district, informational and fun conferences outside of Silicon Valley, health awareness events, movie nights, discussion panels, and an upcoming Valentine's Potluck. Of course, there will also be countless opportunities for members to socialize with each other.
Two weeks ago, on January 23, 2007, a QTIP Officer's Retreat was held.
During the five-hour retreat, the officers and the members who were voluntarily
present planned for this semester and for QTIP's future. I daresay that
QTIP, in all of its years, has never been as strong as it is today, and
I am positive that QTIP will only continue to grow from this point forward.
Please join QTIP as we work together to strengthen not only our club but
also our connection with the community outside our club's meeting room.
The following are the current QTIP officers:
Head Chair (formerly president): Derrick Quema
Co-Chair (formerly vice president): Victor Ly
Communications Officer (new position): Caroline Le
Treasurer (new position): Josef Aurelio
QTIP meetings are held every Wednesday at 5: 30p.m. in the Almaden Room of the Student Union, and we hope that we will see you there. Don't be shy; bring your friends and make new ones. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Victor Ly
Co-Chair, QTIP
